And there's a new preface.
Preface to the 40th Anniversary Edition of Wise Woman Herbal for the Childbearing Year:
My interest in herbs and herbal medicine sprouted in the sixties, grew in the seventies, and had its first flower in the eighties. That first flower is this book, the book you are holding in your hands, my very first book.
Wise Woman Herbal for the Childbearing Year.
The genesis of this book was desire. My desire to make simple, safe, effective herbal information available to as many women as possible. "Herbal medicine is people's medicine."
I decided to invest myself, to invest in herbal medicine. I envisioned my book as my "retirement account." I hoped it would sell for many years and keep money flowing to me as I aged. And it has. It has. Pauline Oliveros, my lover and supporter, lent me an early Apple computer, and we both wrote books that year. Mine, based on the nationwide training program for midwives I'd created. Hers, an exploration of her early musical influences.
Forty years later, here is my book, still in print, just as I had envisioned. And not just in English, but also in French (in print), Spanish (available online), Dutch (in print?), German (in print?), and ebook (available online). I am so proud that this work, my first flower, is still useful. Herbal information is a "forever" skill. It doesn't change with the passing of time. Wise Woman Herbal for the Childbearing Year is used in midwifery schools all over the world. And, most importantly, this flower is passed from mother to daughter, aunt to niece, grand-mother to granddaughter, friend to friend, sister to sister. It was my intention then – as it is now – to fill every page of this book with loving green blessings. From my heart to yours.

May it continue in beauty.
May it always be a giveaway.
May it partake of the earth's heartbeat.
